The house stood at the edge of the village, surrounded by tall trees and fields that stretched towards the distant hills. It was a large, old-fashioned house with creaking wooden floors, narrow windows and a huge kitchen where most of the family's time was spent. On the morning of the royal announcement, the house was unusually quiet.
My name is Lady Tremaine, although most people know me simply as Cinderella's wicked stepmother. I have never understood why I was given such a cruel name. I was a strict woman, certainly, but I believed in hard work, good manners and looking after your family. When I married Cinderella's father, I thought we would have a happy life together. I soon discovered that things would not be quite so simple.
When the royal ball was announced, Cinderella became determined to attend. I told her that she could go if she finished her work first, but she spent the entire day complaining and refusing to help. Her stepsisters had worked hard to prepare for the ball, while Cinderella did nothing. Eventually, I had no choice but to leave without her. As we travelled to the palace, I felt guilty, but I knew that Cinderella needed to learn that she could not always get her own way.
Later that evening, the palace doors opened and everyone turned to look at a beautiful young woman. Nobody recognised her, but I knew immediately that it was Cinderella. She had somehow managed to get to the ball after all. The prince walked straight towards her and asked her to dance. I watched in disbelief as Cinderella smiled at him. Then, before I could speak to her, the clock began to strike midnight and she ran from the palace.
The next morning, the whole kingdom was talking about the mysterious girl at the ball. The prince announced that he would search for her using the glass slipper she had left behind. When he arrived at our house, my daughters tried on the slipper, but it did not fit. Then Cinderella stepped forward. To everyone's surprise, it fitted perfectly. I realised that the girl I had been trying to discipline was about to become a princess.
Cinderella left our house with the prince, and everyone called me the wicked stepmother. Nobody ever asked what had really happened. Perhaps I was too strict, and perhaps I could have treated Cinderella differently. But I was never the cruel monster that the stories make me out to be. I was simply a woman trying to keep a difficult family together. Sometimes, there are two sides to every fairy tale.
